Black Thunder stood in the rhinoceros’ cage luring it
back inside.
Noise: AWWW!!!!
A deep scream bellowed.
Black Thunder flew above the zoo to see what it was. From above she saw an
angry gorilla. A couple zookeepers were trying to calm it down. Black Thunder
flew fast to get between the gorilla and the zookeepers. She landed hard,
kicking up dust round her.
Black Thunder: Let me
handle this gorilla.
The gorilla pounded his
chest with his hands. Black Thunder pounded her hands on her chest and
screamed. The gorilla screamed back. It sent Black Thunder’s hair flying away
from her unmasked face. Black Thunder took off flying around the gorilla. The
gorilla tried to smack her out of the air. She dodged. It tried again and hit her.
Knocked out of the air she fell to the ground in a heap. She got back up angry.
Black Thunder (Enraged): I
tried to play nice! I have had it!
Black Thunder: GET IN
YOUR CAGE!!!
She punched the ground
and it shook. Scared the gorilla headed off for its cage. Black Thunder smiled
to herself hands on her hips. She took off flying now that the animals were
secure. She flew above the ticket booth when a familiar voice called.
Carter: Black Thunder!
She stopped but thought
about flying off since she’d lost her mask.
Carter: My friend’s in
trouble. She needs your help.
Now invisible she landed
before him.
Black Thunder: What?
Who’s in trouble?!?
Carter: Katie! A girl
from my school.
Black Thunder gasped. She
covered her mouth with her hands to hide the sound.
Black Thunder: What
happened?
Carter looked like he was
about to answer when Black Thunder’s phone rang. She checked her (still
invisible) phone. On her phone was a text from Katie. A picture of the abandon
house from earlier. One word of text to the message: HELP!
Black Thunder: Never
mind.
Black Thunder flew away
before Carter could say anymore.
Cater: Wait! It’s not
what you think!
But it was too late Black
Thunder was long gone.
Black Thunder landed in front of the door to the house
from earlier. The wind snapped her hair and cape back. She was still unmasked
as she charged into the abandoned house.
Black Thunder: Katie!
Where is Katie!
Evil Kate appeared from
the shadows dressed in the dress she stole, stroking the stuffed cat.
Evil Kate: I’m your best
friend.
The chandelier fell down
on Black Thunder with a loud crash.
Black Thunder woke up groggy. Evil Katie leaned on the
wall nearby stroking Lei’s stuffed cat.
Evil Kate: Good, you’re
awake. It would have been easier while you were out, but it’s more fun to watch
you squirm.
Black Thunder: What are
you doing Katie! Is that storm!?!
Evil Kate: Don’t worry. I
will make this as painless as possible.
She set the cat on Black Thunder’s
lap. She was tied up with her hands separated, enclosed in her dampening
gloves.
Black Thunder: Katie look
at me. I’m your best friend.
Evil Kate circled her
friend menacingly as she attached probes and wires to bare parts of her skin.
Evil Kate: You’re a
superpowered, pale shadow of Lei Song!
Black Thunder: What are
you talking about, Katie?
Katie walked over to a
giant control panel.
Evil Kate: I want my best
friend back!
She grabbed on to a giant
lever. Before she could pull the lever, Black Thunder screamed.
Black Thunder:
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Katie rushed over to her
friend. She unfastened one of the restraints on her unconscious friend’s wrist.
Black Thunder pushed her
friend clear cross the room. Quickly, she unfastened and pulled off her other
restraints. Evil Kate stood ready to charge at her friend. Black Thunder
removed her dampening gloves.
Black Thunder: The
glovers are off!
Evil Kate: Doesn’t
matter. I’ll still be taking your powers.
Black Thunder: And I’ll
be taking you—OOOF.
Katie rushed her knocking
them both over. With Black Thunder lying on bottom the levitated both of them
into the air. She did a summersault and tossed her friend through the air.
Katie stood and bolted for the stuffed animal on the nearby table. Black
Thunder flew over beating her friend to the table, knocking it over with her
landing. Katie picked up a nearby metal chair to swing it at her friend. Black
Thunder was faster catching the chair before it could make contact. She broke
the chair in half flinging Katie back. Katie got right back up and dusted
herself off.
Evil Kate: I don’t know
what Carter sees in you! You risk your life fighting supervillains without a
second thought, but you’re too scared to face him!
Black Thunder stood
confused. Evil Kate punched her in the face. Black Thunder twisted her head but
was unhurt. She grabbed her friend by the shoulders and flew upward.
Black Thunder: Katie!
Snap out of it!
Evil Kate: I’m not out of
it. You are if you think having powers and putting on a costume makes you a
hero.
Black Thunder (Gasped):
Huh!
Katie headbutted her.
Black Thunder reeled back
and let go of her friend. She watched frozen in terror as Evil Kate fell. Katie
landed on her back with her eyes closed. Lei flew down to her friend’s side.
Black Thunder: Katie wake
up!
Katie opened her eyes and
looked around disoriented.
Katie: Lei, why are you
in your Black Thunder outfit?
Relieved she started
laughing.
Black Thunder: Come on,
lets get out of here.
She picked up her
disoriented friend in her arms and flew away.
It wasn’t until they were
in the neighborhood that they spoke again. Katie looked at her flying friend.
Katie: Lei, I’m sorry.
Black Thunder looked at
her friend surprised. She set her friend on her feet.
Katie: I was acting on
every evil impulse I had. I couldn’t stop myself.
Black Thunder scowled at
her friend.
Lei: Why did you do it
Katie? You know what I am without my powers.
Katie: My best friend,
Lei. We used to worry about boys, homework, and shopping. Now we worry about
giant robots, supervillains, and saving the city. Lei, I don’t think I can do
this much longer.
She looked more sad than
mad.
Lei: I could not tell you
about it!
She turned up her nose.
Lei: If you can, not talk
to me!
Katie’s eyes went wide.
Katie: Lei, that’s not what
I meant!
Lei had already turned
around about to fly off.
Lei: You can get home by
yourself from here.
Katie: Lei wait!
But it was too late.
Black Thunder took off in a blur. She left Katie standing alone in the dark.
